Reinstate, The Tate Institute, Silvertown
The Tate Institute was built in 1887 as a social club for workers at the Thames refinery of Tate and Lyle sugars “for the benefit of the industrial classes of Silvertown and its neighbourhood”. It saw use as a bar and dancehall, a centre for sports clubs, needlework clubs, scouts and guides, an air raid shelter, library and later a squat after its abandonment in the early 2000s. Currently, the Institute is undergoing renovation as part of a bid by ReSpace projects to redevelop it back into a community facility.
